If you think everything is funny, have no respect for anyone, and simply don't know when to shut up, you are an asshole, not a smartass. Either way, someone will shut you up at some point.

I think being nice is about it...if you smart off and then someone is like, hey, that actually kinda hurt my feelings, if you're apologetic and explain that wasn't you're intent it's way better than telling the offended party to just lighten up, you were just being funny. But each situation is different and sometimes people pretend to be offended or over exaggerate for drama reasons.
I think if you regularly have to tell people to lighten up, either you are hanging out with the wrong people or you are an ass hole and have no concept of appropriate humor.
Yes, if you laugh at someone when they tell you their dad just died, you're an asshole. If you get upset about a joke someone posts on the internet, you're uptight. Ditto if you go to a comedy club and heckle a comedian you don't agree with, in which case you also have bad etiquette.
