It's sad, and people in his own country hated him, jeered at him, and made fun of him. I think he will come back, but it's sad he feels he has to retire because he disappoints the fans
He's quitting because the federation that runs the Argentinian National Team is a disaster. He's doing it to make them get their s**t together. He'll be back, count on it.
Plus those were single games michael jordan missed. Messi missed a free kick in the WC final (albeit very difficult) and they were the clear favourites in both copa america finals with Chile. And michael jordan has won 6 NBA titles, the highest achievement possible in basketball whereas internationally messi has only an olympic medal (still amazing but not highly rated in world football). His quitting is his spirit being completely ripped down from his pride and love of the game. He has been the best player in the best team possibly ever, and the key player to all of Argentinas success over the last few years. If he wants to call it quits he has earned that much. *rant over*
