The problem, is that Catalonia was never really independent because it was part of the Kingdom of Aragon, not the Kingdom of Catalonia. They claim independence for two reasons: the government made a reforn to govern more there, after their status in Spain changed and became less important when making decissions, and the party that is governing is really corrupt and does not wants the Catalonians to focus on their corruption scandals but on getting independence. The public TV on Catalonia is one of the most corrupts and never focus on the corruption scandals but on the independence, and it is controlled by the Catalonian Government; plus it is the most watched TV there
I'm not arguing the politics of it, just pointing out that Spain isn't worried about the UK leaving the EU because it affects people, but because it has a faction of separatists it doesn't want to give ideas.
Yeah, I'm first to admit I have NO idea of Spain's politics, I just know they have a couple upstarts over there who are probably going to raise hell now, so welcoming Scotland to the EU without UK is a no go if they don't want to give the wrong impression. So they couldn't advocate for accepting UK separatists/refugees even if they wanted to.
FYI: This is Madrid's town hall and it's now decorated with a 20 metres gay pride flag. Also, Netflix has made an ad that is a gay pride flag with a phrase reading: Rainbow is the New Black
