I mean like this: Misisippi. You could leave out the second p too while you're at it.

The only reason it was spelled like that was because if you say it fast it sounds like that. And its our thick accent that does that to us.

apparently it derived from the French word Messipi, which derived from the name the Native Americans called the river: Misi-ziibi. So it seems like it became a weirdly spelled combination.
