I think because as kids we couldn't fully grasp some of the jokes

It is. Thanks to pokemon go and the fact the new gen is about to be released, we've started watching Pokemon indigo league. It's actually not a pain to watch. I don't like ash still, but there's a sense of humor that just went over my head as a kid that I just crave anymore. I can't wait to watch more "oldies but goodies"
