I'm gonna have to agree with you on this one. It's fine to hope that certain characters get together, because sometimes that's how a series is designed - to keep you guessing who will end up with who. But the level it's been taken to by obsessed teenage girls is quite definitely disgusting, intrusive, and fucking disrespectful.
Remember a long time ago how there was a picture of a guy on a bus or something and he let a homeless (?) guy sleep on his shoulder? Or something to that effect. Maybe a soldier, I don't remember. But holy shit the shipping around that. Someone made a whole play-by-play of their lives together, drew a (some?) comic, the whole nine yards plus another. That's not shipping. That's intrusive and disrespectful.
Yeah—shipping real people is intrusive. But with fictional characters it's really not. It's just enjoying two characters as a pair, and making content based on that that everyone can fangirl over. And it's great, because you get to see so many different interpretations of the same two characters. And making the content is just as enjoyable—I write fanfiction, for instance, and it's really fun working with pre-existing characters and situations and shaping them so that when /that/ happened in chapter x, it was secretly about /this/.
Are you okay there, Chu?
