At first blush, Cape Town looks like it's nestled in an old crater. It's not, as it turns out... but I learned that Table Mountain wasn't formed by upheaval, but but erosion.

It's a syncline mountain, meaning that the peak was once the bottom of a valley. The rest was eroded away.
