Mmmm, actually they were invented as a horse riding shoe, letting the rider hook his heels into the stirrups so he could fire his bow from a more stable position. But then, yes, they became a symbol of high status for men.

However cowboy high heels were only 1-2 Inches and the later on adoption of high heels in male high society were much taller like todays high heels
