"Because, ma'am, I already looked for it about an hour ago for another customer." That's half the conversation I have with people.

I love hearing that from argumentative customers at Home Depot. Because we don't have a back. There is no "back" here in Home Depot. Besides, even if we did, the answer would still be no because I looked it up and the inventory tells me we have zero on hand.

This was me at kohls when I worked there, or very rarely I would just say this because I didn't want to deal with it.
