It's not as easy to drop off your dog at a shelter, we had to give up our dog too because my dad lost his job and we had to move to an apartment. They charged us $280 just to give him up and they said he would be put down anyways since he was older :(
And I don't understand why a shelter would charge you for giving up your pet? Here they don't do that. The only money shelters get is from donations and the fees you pay if you want to adopt a pet. Otherwise - what would stop you from just tying your dog in front of the shelter, waiting to be found? Oh and may I add - our shelters don't put down pets. Even aggressive or old ones.
It's not as easy, I'm a property manager and here where I live most apartments or landlords will not take pets and especially if they're pit bulls they won't take them under any circumstance. Sometimes it's not their choice if the home insurance finds out you have a "dangerous breed" living there your premium will go though the roof!
its not always that easy. people get laid off, unexpected expenses come upn divorce happens. especially by the time a dog is older its not always the puppy flipping that young adults tend to do but the reasons are a bit more legitimate. i agree, shelters try and recoup fees but reliquinshing a dog the proper way can be upwards of $100. whn you dont know how youre going to pay your housing or your groceries thats not doable. plus, moving to a place that allows dominant breed dogs may just be an expense they cant afford. granted this looks like an entirely different situation but i try to not jump to a conclusion.
This is sad. I hope people would seriously consider that having a pet is a lifetime commitment. You cannot just dump them aside once you are tired of them, or some circumstances forced you to leave them behind. Animals have feelings too.

Those complete and total assholes! They could have at least made an effort to do the right thing! Sometimes when I see things like this, it makes me angry at humanity. I mean, what kind of people would do such a thing? IT'S *WHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's so sad... Did you look for new owners yourself?
I would have!
