One of my professors this semester specifically put in the syllabus that he wanted proper and professional emails from students but does this exact same thing. Replies back as if he's sending a text message.
I would say that professors, especially those with multiple degrees, seniority and tenure have earned that brevity.
Look at it this way; You might have 5 to 8 professors to correspond with during any given semester... double or even triple that if you count TA's.
Now, how many students are taking the course? Hundreds, maybe a thousand or more? Their time is valuable, especially at the beginning of the course when they haven't determined which students are worth their time.
