Fuck those parents though. If the doctors are willing to do it for free, and it could do anything to comfort their kids after a goddamn surgery, then let him have it.

But maybe they didn't even ask the doctor and he overheard it from the nurses or something. And they just didn't wanna bother the Doc and his assistants with something like that.

you also don't know how the parents said it. it looks blunt here, but i am sure they said it kindly.

...unfortunately from the time to the materials I'm betting that was a massively expensive, non-insurance covered action to be revealed in a bill from the hospital and a denial from insurance a couple months later.
