We have something called pot hole season. Pot holes spring up seemingly overnight especially during winter.

We rarely get ice and it happens even when the temps don't drop below 50.

There air pockets in the road that fill with water and get more and more hollow and fragile before breaking creating a pot hole. Winter can speed this up by expanding water in the road.
