Save me from this never ending nightmare

Actually they eat what can't fight back not just dead things, they will eat snails, bugs, bird eggs, and sometimes they pray on small animals like mice or other small birds. Because you can't always find dead things to eat. It be like the "bread N butter-flys" from alice in wonderland that live on weak tea with cream and die if can't find any.
