It should have immediately been put in the trash pile, because that is not an appropriate way to start a college application. There is a time and a place for everything, and a college application is neither of those things for that type of statement.
Unfortunately, being unprofessional and excessively/unwelcomingly open about sexuality is very much herd behavior these days. It really isn't anyone's business but your partner's.
There's a difference between spouting on with that Tumblr-gender bullshit, and a clever pun. Anyway, I'm starting to see sexual orientation crop up on survey forms and the like.
The beginning should grab attention and stand out. The problem is that this person is using their sexuality as a way to stand out. This could easily lead to the division of different people. I would not have accepted a beginning like that.
