I had no idea that Canada kept the U. Do they also do the same with words like favourite and glamour?

That's what we do in the USA, we were founded by rebellion. It's a proud tradition. (The caveat is that said rebellion must be justified. Here the justification is that the U is not necessary to form the sound of the word.) That being said, I prefer the spelling that includes the U.
