Making up words isn't a particularly intelligent thing to do.
It's mostly pointless because no one else will know what it means, which is kind of the point of words.
Well someone's gotta do it, whether it happens "organically" or not is a matter of opinion. It would have to be repeated a lot anyway for it to catch on. Which could make it seem forced to some people anyway.
"whether it happens "organically" or not is a matter of opinion. "
No it isn't, at least not generally.
"It would have to be repeated a lot anyway for it to catch on."
Sure, but not by the same person or group of people for the purpose of making it popular.
"Which could make it seem forced to some people anyway. "
It's pretty easy to tell, as long as the etymology is well documented.
Yes it is. Almost everything is a matter of opinion and perspective. Yeah I never said by the same people. But even that could be argued. Germanic words had to be repeated by the Germanic tribes a lot before they influenced Old English, but none of them complained about it. (and if they did it doesn't matter because it still influenced them and caught on)
"Almost everything is a matter of opinion and perspective."
Not really. Facts are a thing.
"But even that could be argued."
Not well.
"Germanic words had to be repeated by the Germanic tribes a lot before they influenced Old English"
Yeah, but no one did it for the purpose of creating new words. It happened naturally, with no intent or direction.
Yeah that's true lol. But what I mean is that something like this is obviously a matter of opinion. The very fact that it can be debated about in a sophisticated way from both sides shows that it's a matter of opinion. "Not well." Again, a matter of opinion, and not a very good basis for an argument that's supposedly based in facts. "Sure, but not by the same person or group of people for the purpose of making it popular." See this is where you misunderstood; I'm not taking about to make words popular, I'm taking about the formation of new words in general.
"something like this is obviously a matter of opinion."
But it's not. Like I said, you can fairly easily tell when someone or some group actively tried to make a word popular, versus when a word becomes popular on it own without anyone really trying to achieve that.
"The very fact that it can be debated about in a sophisticated way from both sides shows that it's a matter of opinion."
But we're not debating about a specific word being forced into popularity, we're talking about how objective that concept itself is.
"not a very good basis for an argument that's supposedly based in facts."
It was just a general statement of disagreement. I can't really refute an argument that hasn't been made.
"I'm not taking about to make words popular, I'm taking about the formation of new words in general."
That's essentially the same thing. If a word isn't popular it may as well not exist.
It's mostly pointless because no one else will know what it means, which is kind of the point of words.
