How would they get footage though? To have a major headline usually you'd need footage

I usually thought they'd actually report when they have more information, so they won't have a 2 second segment of " this tragedy happened, we don't know any other information yet "

My local news channel today mentioned nothing about the £1.3 billion project in my city, that includes a pretty significant tidal lagoon project, but felt it appropriate to mention that Eva Longoria may be back in the capital soon after coming to Wales in August last year. Seriously.

Like all businesses, the goal is to increase sales revenue and profit. The media can sell their commercial time slots for more money when they attract more viewers. That means the media outlets will report on whatever they believe the most people will tune in to watch. In other words, the media is just responding to the demand of viewers. It's the viewers fault this crap covers the airwaves, they're the one's who care so much about hollywood and pop music.

I'd like to think that the media has a moral obligation- if not a legal or fiscal one- to attempt to report important events in an objective way. This is clearly not the model that news - especially American news- is currently following. In addition to the dangerous lack of education and awareness of current events that this results in we also get further cocooned in our own echo chambers as this model encourages media establishments to promote certain biases even when covering substantive news. As consumers- If something doesn't jive with our worldview we have the option to flip the channel and find something that does. If Fox News chose to report on a positive aspect of the Welfare program or Transgender rights or CNN decided that there was something good to say about Trump they would lose viewership. I have very strong political beliefs- but even I know that the increasing divide between right and left is dangerous to our ability to function as a society.
