Actually, there is no reason the alphabet shouldn't be in a specific order and many reasons that it should be. The particular order chosen might seem random, but if it wasn't in order, you wouldn't be able to type on your computer, for one.

Your computer functions by assigning a code to each symbol (letters, numbers, punctuation marks, etc.). If the alphabet were in no specific order, you could not assign a static code to each letter, ergo there would be no way for you to type anything into your computer. Also, the entire field of cryptography would be essentially nonexistent. It would change a lot of things that we don't even think of.
