Maybe the buildings were falling apart and a hazard ? Maybe they needed to upgrade things like elevators or pipes for water. While I agree we shouldn't just knock down all the buildings, not every building is special and in need of preservation.
But the concrete one, which is a perfect example of the brutalist architecture style, has already been replaced with a new building in 2013. New demands require new buildings which are often built in the most popular style in that given moment, maybe in 20 years people will feel sad about the demolition of the concrete building.
Believe it or not, no. I'm not even from the UK., though I would like very much one day to visit. Never mind the fact ladies with British accents are kinda my kryptonite, they make my heart beat funny.
I looked it up to better rebut the concept put forth by the image. I wanted to see if there was history concerning say a fire or the buildings were demolished by bombing in WW2.
That's when I learned it was Birmingham and about the revitalization project. I looked at the artist's concepts and it looks gorgeous.
It does, it's just sad to see it go, spent an awful lot of time in this building as a child in the library and then as an adult in the clubs/bars ajoining
It's part of an ambitious, massive redevelopment and revitalization plan.

I was thinking about similar things in my life just now and one of the last lines from Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" just popped into my mind.
"Don't look back, you can never look back."
