Wait wasn't there like a law or something that was supposed to outlaw making commercials louder than the show you were watching ?

By the metric they use to measure it, the ads aren't *louder* - they brickwall compress the sound so it seems louder, the idea being that you can still hear it when you're running off to the bathroom or whatever.

I just spent about half an hour reading about this. The law is that they aren't allowed to increase the actual decibel level (overall peak volume), so what they do is compress the dynamic range, which makes the softer sounds louder and leaves the loud sounds intact.

This is a marketing scheme, they won't stop. If a commercial is much quieter or louder than what you have been watching it grabs your attention.
