It's a male lion alone against a herd of tough mothafuckas. Usually, the female lions do the hunting and they do so as a group to take down solitary creatures or a small, manageable group of creatures. He made a smart decision.
no, bison will kill any lion they can whenever they can, regardless of its gender. the males are in fact stronger though they only protect territory instead of hunting, but bison (or in fact any large prey animal, elephants included) will kill lions whenever possible. there are plenty of female lions killed by bison herds too.

yeah it was supposed to be a response to the fact that it seemed to me like you were implying that a female lion in the same position would have been able to take all the bison down or something, since they do all the hunting. sorry for not making that clear :P
Oh I understand the confusion. My point wasn't a gender one. It was a numbers one. In this post, the male is alone. Females are usually in a group. Does that make more sense?
yeah, sorry, i misinterpreted it. when you said "female lions" i thought you meant collective individuals, yknow? not groups of females, which is true. either way, buffalo will in fact try to isolate one lion from a group of females (true fact) and then kill it. just sayin, though i see where the confusion came from and i apologise.
