I've done that, seen someone off at the gate at an airport. It's possibly one of the most painful emotional things you can suffer I think.
She was a lovely girl and I fell for her hard and she knew it too. Some of it was even reciprocated, She had a small interest in me... and it was growing.
We'd known each other for a while, but then one day, something clicked. Sadly, even before we started to hang out, she was destined to leave. We just didn't have enough time to forge something more serious and lasting.
I saw her off at the airport, the only one of all of our friends that did. Now, I don't really even remember what I said to her, other than I'll miss you.
She promised to write.
She didn't.
I rarely think of her, but I still remember her fondly. I doubt I'd really have anything to say to her now though. Much like how Jimmy Page talks about his ex girlfriend that wanted him to quit the band. The one he left to be a rock star.

In the midst I think of you, and how it used to be."
I've been back to that airport many times over since. When I do, sometimes there is a tickle of recognition.
