Oh, god, yes. This worship of the "original concept" is basically a new thing. Up till, what, the 1900's maybe? Almost all fiction was fanfiction, the most common subject in the "age of reason" era being Greek and Roman mythology. Even in Shakespeare - the wordplay is most definitely original, but most of the plays follow a long-established plot, like Romeo and Juliet.

You don't dare say the Divine Commedy is a fanfiction. Just... no mate, we are a bit off the road there

Well, it *is* using someone else's pre-established setting, and Mephisto fits almost perfectly into the Satan archetype.

Well Dante invented a huge deal of things (e.g.: the purgatory that didn't exist before) but living in 1300, he took a lot of things from classical culture (1 century before Christ and Ancient Greek culture) but never copying, imitating at the most, re-elaborating

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies counts, but I'm pretty certain to be counted as fanfiction the story has to take place with the same characters and in the same setting/universe. Fanfiction is supposed to be you adding onto someone else's story. So while 50 shades started as a fanfiction of Twilight once she changed who the characters were and where the story took place it was no longer a fanfic.

Classifying any type of fiction based on an existing work under just "fanfiction" would be too confusing, I would think. Fanfiction is too general of a term to use when classifying a piece. If there was a "fanfiction" section at a bookstore for example, you would be seeing a wide variety of different genres and sub-genres just within that one little section and it would be incredibly disorganized. A book's genre is supposed to be a classification to help a reader find something to read based on its contents. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is considered a comedy/horror (I think, I just Googled that), for example. At the very least, I would hope people don't just read fanfiction for the sake of reading fanfiction.

There was a Fifth harmony fan fiction that was published into a full length book but the author had to change the names for legal reasons and stuff. The book was pretty good actually

Once I was talking with a friend about fanfictions, and she said that the Aeneid by Virgil was the first fanfic.

I honestly can't stand fan fiction due to being forced to read HATFIC and a horrible girl writing disgusting fanfic about a guy I used to like and I. I have only read one good one (Twist and Shout) and can't read any more.
