I always wanted to know when exactly when we started to use the calendar we use today and when did we start marking years like we do now. AND what did people use before that.

Well, Rome for example used the creation of their city as the start for their calendar I believe. They switched to using Jesus as the start around 525 AD

Except when the true definitions for BC and AD have nothing to do with religion.....

What? How does it not have anything to do with religion? It's "before christ", a religious figure, and "anno domini" which means the year of the Lord, also referring to a religious entity
