In a video I onced watched about this, one of the reasons why Satoru Iwata cut his own pay after the Wii U's flop was because the company had to cut salaries to make up for their product's failure. Iwata took note of this and decided to cut his own salary fearing that lowering the employees' pay would inevitably affect staff morale...
Because of this, the folks at Nintendo strived to perfect both the Switch and Breath of the Wild as a means of thank you and goodbye to their former boss.
