Because it can actually be convenient? It's basically like scanning something into a computer, attaching it to an email, having the recipient download the attachment, and then print it. Except skipping half those steps.
We still have people sending us faxes to request references. Except our fax number literally is just a service that converts the fax to PDF and emails it to us. If they've provided an email address on it, I edit the PDF and email it back. If not, well. I'm not standing for 10 minutes at the slow-ass fax machine to send you back your request because you don't know what year it is.
