As a developer, I can say that I've never accepted "exposure" as a payment. True, when I first starting out coding in the public I did free jobs to get a better feel for it but I've never taken a job for "exposure". I might lower the price of a resource if I find it interesting and may even just do it for free if it's a small job. The guy get's his code and I get a short break of the previous large asf project I was working on. I seriously am not built for big projects. If I code for more than 6 hours straight I am suddenly incapable of doing the most basic of math. If I press on for a few more hours I couldn't even tell you what a Java class was...

Unfortunately, none. I did steal a plush dog from my little sister though.

Then again, isn't it weird that we can find free code all over the place, but barely any free art? Devs are pushing their entire hard drives to GitHub, sharing solutions on StackOverflow, while artists are sitting on their work.

Meta twist: someone else steals the comic and posts it somewhere else without compensating/consulting the artist, but figures it's funny so it'll be good exposure.

What's an exposure? Fake payment?

Exposure is where you don't get paid money but they show off your work so that people might hire you for money. Like if you have a clothing company, you give Tom Cruise a $6,000 jacket for free. People see him wearing it, find out it's yours, and buy your clothes. Giving away one free jacket helped sell thousands. It CAN be a good move but most people who want to pay exposure aren't in a position to really bring you enough business to make it worth your time. Saying you'll pay in exposure is basically the same as telling someone you want them to use their skills for you but don't think the skill is worth any money. Unless you have the right factors "exposure" is generally worthless and won't generate enough business to equal what you would have charged for the job.
