Honestly, I'm rewatching Avatar for the first time since in a few years, since I only ever ever really watched it casually as a younger kid. Now, i realize that Iroh is the best and most wise character on the show. He wears the mask of a happy old man with no worries, when in reality he was the one always supporting and giving advice to everyone else, even with the burden of his sons death looming over him. And his main goal was always to protect Zuko and make him a better man, because he felt he could never do the same for his son. Even after Zuko betrayed him multiple times, even after he said he was changed, he was always there and able to easily forgive. I think after his sons death was also the reason he turned against being on the firenation side of the war and urged Zuko to do the same.

Not to mention Irohs bending skills are really badass. More than anyone gives him credit for.
Iroh is such a dragon of the west.
