Maybe it's because our nations have differing values. I don't know much about Germany, but Americans historically take pride in self-sufficiency, a strong and just military, and large events where people can rally around local symbols of strength.
That's why patriotic Americans don't want to be nannied by the state, why we choose to serve our military/government, and why we enjoy local events and sports.

We're just more open and obvious about our patriotism
The points in the post are about how ostentatious, showy events of "patriotism" are ultimately hollow. It's easy to go to a baseball game and take off your hat for the National Anthem, but in a practical sense it means nothing. And I love going to sporting events! And I would say service to your nation and your democracy, not necessarily your military/government, means more.

When i read "Americans don't want to be nannied by the state" what I understand is: "fuck the unfortunate, if I think long enough, I find how it's their own fault". That's a bit like in hinduist and buddhist countries, if your current life sucks, you made a mistake in your last life. Also the rallying around national symbols and events is pretty, pretty pre-enlightenment. Except for the fact that today all of that is for the profit, the profit, and nothing but the profit. I'm not proud to be where I am, but I sure am glad. The chance to live an authentic life without escaping into the woods here seems a lot higher here to me.
