It has to be that rigid to protect the batteries. Having a car burst into flames after a minor accident isn't a great selling point.

The reason cars collapse is to protect the people inside of it, so that the energy is absorbed into the car minimizing the forces on the people... So now all the forces will be on the people, so that the batteries are protected?

Not necessarily. An absorption material could be used in place of the original design.
