Wouldn't it be smarter to have a doctor do it instead?

Guess it depends on the vaccine. For example we are recommended HPV vaccines for pre teen children. When not having unprotected intercourse with multiple partners as a twelve year old would have a higher efficacy rate than the suggested method. Also the DTaP is a waste of everyone's time and money. The measles,/mumps/rubella/varicella is a good one, as is meningococcal.
Just do your research, and remember the health care system is there to provide a service for you, it's up to you to determine what service you want. Or walk into a car mechanics and tell them you have no idea what you want, just put it on my tab.
DTaP is not a waste of time or money. Pertussis (whooping cough) is making a return because people choose not to vaccinate. Kids do die from this. Both diphtheria and tetanus as well. There are many studies showing the efficacy and safety of vaccines. Trust your doctors. They are not just trying to make money.

Diphtheria: In the United States, 57 cases were reported between 1980 and 2004. Death occurs in between 5% and 10% of those affected. High rate of FIVE deaths in a quarter century out of a population of hundreds of millions.
Pertussis: in 2015 16.3 million case reported resulted in 58,700 deaths, out of a population of billions. The vaccine becomes less effective over time. symptoms are usually similar to those of the common cold with a runny nose, fever, and mild cough. Disease may occur in those who have been vaccinated, but symptoms are typically milder.
Tetanus occurs in all parts of the world but is most frequent in hot and wet climates where the soil contains a lot of organic matter. In 2015 there were about 209,000 infections and about 59,000 deaths. Which is 0.001 percent of the global population.
Given your numbers I still choose to vaccinate: my son got whooping cough (very young, before he received his vaccination) and while it did not kill him it did make him extremely sick and if it had gone untreated it could have left him permanently brain damaged - he ran a fever over 105.

You should choose to vaccinate, but you haven't chosen to vaccinate; youve chosen to do what your told without researching first. Its nice to be right in hindsight, but the point I'm making isn't that one should not choose to vaccinate, its to read some literature and educate ourselves about the medical procedures we're having performed on our children.
A fever from a whopping cough is scary, like pox, and school, and sleepovers, and summer camp; being a parent seems to be one worry after another. But understanding the risks and rewards of permanent decisions we make helps alleviate some worry.
