It is probably a feature that was implemented and largely ignored by the users, like nudges and pokes on other social platforms. No one actually uses them as far as I know.
That or it's some kind of vote feature that allows him to ask for the vergine and bob pics, or a warning from the app he is about to based on his history.

Anyways: Normally you either swipe left (no) or right (yes). You will only get matched up and be able to write, when the other person swipes yes too. However, once a day, you can give a person a "superlike" (swipe up). The other person then gets a notification that she was superliked. Still, if he/she doesn't swipe right, you don't match up, but it increases the chances, as you stand out more.
