I don't know why, but at first I thought it said "planes" and I was major confused for a minute trying to figure out how you're supposed to get the food off of it before you try to fly it and why you would even want to.

NO. This may well be a legitimate "life hack", IF for some reason you vehemently prefer plates to bowls or other deeper welled containment devices. The REAL reason they fold up/out is so that they can be shipped more conveniently, without large air cavities wasting valuable shipping volume (as in the folded form).
