To be fair, he was abused during his formative years as a Charmander. It may be that that's what he believes to be "normal behavior" after observing the same behavior in his old trainer. And he does make an effort to change in later seasons.
But don't mind me, I'm just psychoanalyzing a dragon from a children's show.

Remember that time Ash was in trouble, flying away in the clutches of a hungry Aerodactyl, and Charmeleon set aside his pride to literally force himself to grow wings and save his truest friend?
