People who run the company decide the hierarchy and job titles, even if it's one person. If they have a business tax ID and pay taxes as a business, they are a company. If it's a one person company and they give themselves the title of CEO, they are the CEO of their own company. Business terminology doesn't cease to apply just because you don't think a business is big enough for it.

A chief executive officer is responsible for meeting the goals or an incorporated entity, as set forth by a board of directors. They work in concert with a myriad of other officers, but maintain the status of figurehead; this is the reason for the descriptive term “chief”. The only thing a part time photographer does is own a $3000 dslr and have the audacity to charge thousands of dollars for something literally everyone can do well.

A CEO is whoever the incorporators (corporation), partners (LLC), or proprietor (sole prop) write on their article and account documents as holding that position. That's it, that's all. That's the only requirement for being a CEO. Husband/wife teams for family stores I work with, with no other employees, often have the CEO and CFO titles. Sole proprietors of these stores will have CEO in their title. The size of the chip on your shoulder that there are people who can work a DSLR well enough to make more money that you doesn't nullify who the company structure names to what position.

I can't say what dancadamorte said any better so I'll just say: Maybe focus more on other things than a persons title? The first janitor at google is worth more than many CEO's and the size of a company isn't always indicative of its wealth nor how it pays. In fairness I will say that unless your company plans to expand soon it comes off a little desperate being CEO of a one person firm. That's like listing your resume as "lead singer in a one man band" but still, the regulation of titles varies greatly and in America almost anyone can claim a royal title or even "esquire." So really if they are passionate in their venture and are able to start and run a corporation solo they may have the skills to be a stable match. Maybe just focus on if they're a good match until you get to a point where you might consider a second date at least.

I think it's a good thing when people make all those grandiose claims. It lets you know immediately who's full of crap. It's like facial,tattoos...you can tell at a glance the people who "just ain't right."
