History lesson! Christmas originally started out as a worship of the sun and winter solstice where the days began to lengthen. Christmas was stolen/adopted by Christians in the first few centuries (1AD-5AD) in order to ease society into their religion. After all, it was easier to start following a new religion if they had the same holiday at the same time of year.
The Bible even seems to have verses that prohibit Christmas which hint towards it's pagan origins with the biggest being:
"For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter." - Jeremiah 10:3-4
In the modern century, Christmas was adopted by a new "religion". Capitalism! With the creation of ornaments, overpriced Christmas cards, and overpriced presents, Christmas has become a celebration of the businesses.
The Bible was commissioned by a pagan who realizing Christianity would be the religion of the future decided to infuse it with as many pagan beliefs as he could
Christians came from pagans. Those pagans had their own traditions and cultures that they applied to a Christian holiday. Like Dia de los Muertos -- it combines All Saints Day with native Mexican traditions. When I buy a Christmas tree, it's a symbol of the life Christ brings. What would be pagan is if I brought it into my home to worship its spirit or something. Just because the symbol is the same object, doesn't mean it doesn't have a different meaning.
