Halos around the sun or moon happen when high, thin cirrus clouds are drifting high above your head. Tiny ice crystals in Earth's atmosphere cause the halos. They do this by refracting and reflecting the light. Lunar halos are signs that storms are nearby. That's one answer.
Just read something about it. Turns out u can see them anywhere, anytime, any season. It is more, likely to be visible when the sun hits the horizon/ sundown. In North Dakota there is one called the 22 degree halo. Look it up.
