It really depends on the specific time period. There was a phase when Hera supposedly thought they were ugly, but I couldn’t tell you precisely the era they believed this and David was made much later. Fun fact: David is slightly out of proportion (his legs are too long) because he was supposed to be seen from below. He was made to be put on a roof I believe but when the person who commissioned him to be made saw him, he thought he was too beautiful and detailed to be viewed from so far away.
