Bulldogs were bred to help bullfighters, and pitbulls were bred to protect children.

Shar peis were also bred for fighting. Their smooth wrinkled skin makes it hard for other dogs to grab hold of them. (If you're wondering, it's the dog breed that looks like a wrinkled satin towel)
