It's always bothered me when games/movies give women useless armour so they look sexy. Want the characters half naked? Fine, but make the men half naked too.

Actually game of thrones got it right, all the fantasy armour looks pretty or slutty or whatever but it's fantasy, which is to say impractical and near useless irl. Most Knights were men but some women did don armour and it was just the same as all the other armour on the planet so ya. Sorry to kill the dream for fantasy nuts who somehow thought that'd be practical. Also leather armour was a great close second to steal but hard to move in, lighter though (aka real armour works nothing like games and movies tell you they do)

i think the impulse may have started because there are a couple of famous cultures that had masculine looking armor. The greeks (spartans especially) put enhanced musculature on there breastplates. that normalized the behavior for men and then since they were already doing that for men it was easy to switch over to doing the same for women without thinking of all the repercussions of the choice.

Aside from the fact that boob bumps aren't practical, why not have a breastplate with boobs AND abs?

Also "boob bumps" actually make it easier to pierce your heart, the armour gets closer to your chest and is already bent so it's easier to break and it's a smaller area of residence. The old roman officer breastplate with abbs was for show not practicality and officers wore different armour to battle of needed. Also knight armour didn't hug the chest like people think, there a lot of space in it because under the plate armour you wear layers of other armour like ring or chain mail and other such layers, because if they pierced the plate they'd have a hard tim piercing the layers beneath and if it was super close to your chest there'd be no room for layers and you'd get stabbed.

I always thought that there was extra plating on the boob bumps, to combat that issue.

Nope it was all for show, the greeks maybe but to make that shape you'd have to bend and beat the metal making it thinner and weaker slightly so armour with boobs and abbs = glorified metal of status not armour
