The problem with plastics in the ocean is the amount of decomposed, microplastics that remain. That's what poses a threat to marine life. Plastic can harm marine life from the point it enters the sea to the point it's been broken down into smaller pieces. Animals still want to eat it. They get sick and die from it.
And we end up eating fish that has plastic in it :/

I found a plastic butter container from 1975 the other day on a work site. No salt water exposure but it was certainly open to the elements. It is in almost perfect condition still. I can share photos if anyones interested
