I always thought that its odd how Mercury is super hot when facing the sun, but its super cold when facing away although it's closest to the sun.

Yeah this happens at the Sahara Desert too. During the summer months, the temperatures on cloudless nights can drop as low as 5° C (41 °F) and reaching over 40 °C (104 °F) during the day.

Well when you don't have an atmosphere it's kind of hard to hold heat from the day

Mercury has little to no atmosphere, so the side that is facing the sun gets extremely hot and the side facing away gets extremely cold, because the atmosphere is supposed to trap in heat, but with a lack of one all of the heat escapes.
