They might be confusing the distance from Alaska to the tip of South America. It's not a straight line tho so the Pan-America highway is about 30,000 miles long. Or the straightest route is about 9,000 miles.

With how the Earth is curved, it is. If you look at a globe it actually lines up despite looking like a parabola. That's the same reason why flights between America and Europe look like they're going to Iceland part of the way through
