He was kind of an ass the entire episode, if I remember correctly. It makes you wonder why he even did it, given he was so adamant (until the end) the door wouldn't have fit them both.

What's the point of tragedy stories if no one dies, right?

They actually could have saved both it wasn't just because of room myth busters proved it was possible.

I think luxurious ship like Titanic would have good woods for its doors which would be able to hold heavy weight, including two people on it.
