Many deaf people do not realize certain things make sounds- but often find out when young. Certain things however they make common sense assessments. The deaf have logic like anyone, and can figure out something might make a noise based on what other types of things they know make noise, and physics. The fact is less often that the adult or developed deaf don’t realize a thing makes a sound, but that they don’t spend a great deal of time thinking about sounds, and even less in contextualizing reaction to sound. In the case of farts- a true story is a woman who in school years was in class and was gassy. She reasoned farts might make a noise, and figured it to be like a cough or sneeze so let them go. She realized by her class mates reactions that most of the hearing do not treat the sound of a fart like the sound of a sneeze.

I'm not buying it. By 23 you would have read a book or closed captioning from a show or movie, seen friends burst out laughing, watched someone cup their hand under their arm, something would have alerted you to the fact that farts make noise even if you can't hear them.
