My Dad was a fire fighter and the chance of one them being burned is slim to none. That outfit they wear into fire is super thick and covers every single inch of their body. They would run out of air before they get burned.
Only way a fireman gets burned is from being careless.
Not always careless on the firefighters part, although that certainly does happen. Unfortunately arson and sabotage cause a lot of burns and injuries for firefighters.
This isn't a tv show sabotage is not happening on every episode.
A really firefighter knows there is steps to take before rushing into a fire. It is there to protect not only themselves and the crew they work with but as well as the lives of the people they are trying to save.
A fire fighter will more likely die from lack of oxygen or falling debris But most leading cause of death for firefighters heart attacks.
They have a higher risk of spraining an ankle than receiving a burn.
Of the 4 structure fires I went on this weekend 3 of them were arson. In my career I would say about 60% to 70% of the fires I've been dispatched to have been arson. And burns happen more than you think, but the majority of the time they are first degree burns on pressure points such as the shoulders from wearing the SCBAs and are little different than sunburns and heal quickly.
No where did I say burns were the most common injury, only that they are caused more by arson because those fire can be unpredictable and don't always have normal fire behavior and flow paths.
As for TV shows I don't bother with that bullshit because it's not even remotely accurate to a real fire scene.
Always thought the main danger (for a properly equipped firefighter) is asphyxiation and actually "cooking" under their equipment. How hot does it get under that gear?
It gets pretty hot after a while, I couldn't give you a number though. Asphyxiation is usually because a firefighter gets trapped or stuck. The air bottle tech has gotten to the point you usually run out of juice or the fire is out before running out of air.
