Should you not have some sort of rudimentary understanding of how a weapon works before you fire it like a dickhead and loose an eye?

that's just a darwin award. It's pretty common knowledge that guns have kick and just straightforward logic that if your shoulder isn't against the butt of it it'll kick back past you and if there is a scope take out an eye possibly scoping it out if its a high caliber rifle.
