I always found it weird when I was in other countries how everyone always expressed how far away something was by distance, not time.

I feel like in the US or in Australia, as parisqueen said, time is more useful since things are so much farther away. In Europe things are much closer so distance might be more useful. Not sure about other continents though
Australia (imo):
Right next door: 5-15 minutes
Not too far: 20-25 mins
A little awhile away: 30-40 minutes
A bit of a drive: 2 + hours
Out in woop woop mate: 4+ hours
