Same with a death. Takes a long time for us to catch up with change like that. Once in a great while, usually when I'm trying to fix something, I get the urge to call my dad. He died 20 years ago, but my intrinsic connection to him never did.

This hurts. I had a best friend who I'll call Lula. We were best friends for only two years, but we were inseparable and had a sleepover every single weekend. Going to her house was like going home. Even her reclusive teen brother liked me. Her parents were never home so we'd veg out, bake or cook or just watch TV in a comfortable silence. But she was sometimes very very mean to me. My mom started to notice how she treated me and I became uncomfortable after years of subtle verbal abuse and brutal backhanded comments. I finally decided to end the friendship. It was so hard. And every once in a while when I have a great meme or picture or certain text I know will make her howl, I'll go to scroll through my contacts and suddenly I'll remember; she hates me, and we will never see each other again.
